into the debates prepared. mitt romney has been preparing for the debates earlier than any candidate we could find on record since july. it took the week of the convention to prepare for the debates. according to "the new york times," he spent eight days preparing for this debate. we expect him to come in ready. he is preparing a bunch of zingers for the debate. we don't think that's how american people will score this. if you want to see zincers, tune into david letterman or seth myers. they want to see a plan to restore economic security for the middle class. that is what the president will accomplish tomorrow night and outline that plan for the american people. >> there is this headline in politico today about how the president needs to avoid quotes that dog him, that washington is broken. one-term proposition. is the debate about avoiding those land mines for the president? keeping the campaign narrative status quo? moving forward, not losing his temper and remaining calm with his substance and not the style? >> i think we see the debates like we saw the convention, which is an opportunity to

was enduring the debate rather than fighting it. romney, on the other hand, came in with a campaign. he had a plan. he was going to dominate the time. he was going to be aggressive. he's going to push the moderator around, which he did effectively. he was going to relish the evening enjoying it. the latest thing we got from romney because he said so is you know what i want to do with people when they're poor? shove them into the emergency room. why didn't obama say that? you talk about social security and medicare people, they're part of your 47%. you want to drop them from the list of eligible americans. you don't have any care for these people. what are you talking about? we've got it on tape, governor. we've got it on tape what you think of these people. don't come out here and pretend you care about old people because you met somebody at some campaign event. you've written off 47% of the country before you even started. where was obama tonight? romney, i loved the split screen. staring at obama. addressing him. like the prey. he did it just right. i'm coming at an incumbent. i've got to

decisive i think that pretty much any other debate than any of us here can remember. i thought gov. romney did a fabulous job on both the relative basis. comparing mitt romney with performances that we usually see, quite fabulous. on a nominal basis, he did very, very well. i think it is true to say president obama is a superior or turk. i think mitt romney is a better debater. romney, you know, we saw something that we had not seen in a long time. it occurred to me that this reminded me more of the mitt romney i met in 1994 when he was running for the senate and came by and met with me and was incredibly an impressive and analytical and fact driven and pragmatic. this was that guy, not so much the person who had been pretending to be an ideologue for the past few years. obama seemed to be like a team sitting on a lead. i would not have said smog it, i would have just said somebody who did not seem to be terribly hungry for it. -- i would not say smug, just somebody that was not hungry for it. i did not really big in these examples after, i do not particularly care for them. -- these insta

as romney explained very clearly in the debate the other night, no, i am not cutting taxes on the richest. what i want to do is lower rates overall by 20%. and eliminate loopholes, deductions, exemptions, that sort of thing. which i think all serious people who look at the tax code think needs to be done. it's the richest of all by the way who take the most advantage of tax deductions. that is a fairer way of looking at t maybe if you have a lot of deductions you don't want to get rid of them. but you always feel like with reductions, somebody else is getting a better deal than you are. mitt romney hasn't specified which deductions. i can think of a few we should get rid of like deductions for state and local taxes. why should the rest of the country be supporting the high tax rates of california and new york? but anyway, that's my position, not mitt romney's and he also explained in the debate, this is my general proposal. we'll argue about it. we'll talk about it. i'll take it to the democrats and we'll work it out. but even the tax policy center that claims this would be a $5 trillion
